Bone Nibbler

Bone Nibbler (commonly known in medical and dental surgery as a Rongeur) is a heavy-duty surgical instrument used to trim, cut, and remove small, sharp fragments of bone or tough soft tissue.

• Primary Function: Shears away irregular bone edges, reduces sharp bony projections (exostoses/torus), and contours the alveolar ridge after tooth extractions or during alveoloplasty.

• Mechanism: Operates on a spring-loaded pliers mechanism with sharp, cup-shaped or scoop-like jaws. When squeezed, the hollowed jaws cut through bone cleanly while trapping the trimmed fragment inside the tip to prevent loose debris in the surgical field.

• Design Variations:

  • Side-Cutting Rongeur: Blades sit parallel to the handles, best for accessing exposed, flat surfaces.

  • End-Cutting / Angled Rongeur: Curved tips designed to reach deep, narrow, or posterior surgical sites.
